Oriental Chess. 17th-18th centuries. Chess figures are engraved from ivory, 10 and 18 cm high. One-half of the figures are white and the other half is brown. Here are knights with slouch hats, spears, and axes in hands; flute-players, Buddhist monks, wine carriers, peasants with baskets. The figures differ in their outfit as well as appearance. None of the chess figures repeats itself. The Chess was delivered to the museum in 1974 by the Ajara Ministry of Finance. According to the former owner of the Chess BAlmoshem Moshiashvili, he used to live in Gagra and happened to purchase the chess at the fair in St Petersburg. It probably dates to the 17th-18th centuries. B. Moshiashvili is living in Jerusalem at present.
