Antonio Canova (1757-1822) - One of the most important classicist Italian sculptors of the late XVIII and early XIX centuries. In 1781 he moved to Rome and soon he became the most popular sculptor of his time in Europe. Canova created two types of works: large public official sculptures and compositions on mythological themes.
The story of Cupid and Psyche is one of the novellas of the “metamorphoses”, written by the ancient Roman writer Apuleius, which tells the love story of the beautiful daughter of the king and Cupid, the son of the goddess Aphrodite. This sculptural composition is a copy. The originals are preserved at Louvre in Paris and at Hermitage in Saint Petersburg.
