Ivan Aivazovsky (1817-1900) - One of the greatest masters of marine art. In 1841, during his stay in Italy, he created the biblical canvas "Chaos, the creation of the world", which was purchased by Pope Gregory XVI and he awarded Aivazovsky with a gold medal. Returning to his homeland, he built a gymnasium, a library, an archaeological museum and an art school in his native city of Feodosia. The local population respected the artist greatly. Aivazovsky created about 6000 paintings. He was a member of Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Saint Petersburg art academies. In 1843, the Art Academy of Florence awarded the 27-year-old artist a gold medal. He was already considered as a great talent in Europe for this period. Aivazovsky is one of those rare artists who received the greatest honor during his lifetime.
