Richard Sommer - (1866-1939). He was born in Munich. 1884-93 he studied at the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts., he worked in Central Asia - in Tashkent, Bukhara and Samarkand in the 1890s and 1900s. During this period, the series of paintings depicting the social life of Central Asia were created. 1912-17 he traveled to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The history, life and people of the Caucasus become an important theme of his works. He has been living in Georgia during some period. In 1939, Sommer was deported from Georgia together with other members of German colony, and his trace was lost. R.Sommer's creative work is characterized by the desire for oriental theme, popular for this period. He is attracted by the exotics of Eastern life, the charm of bustling bazaars and corners of old cities, life scenes, steppe landscapes, etc. The creative mastery of the artist is characterized by the special expressiveness of the vivid effects of light and shade and color.
