By the 1970s, Batumi was an Asian-style city with a population of about 3,000. There were three mosques in the city: the Aziziye Mosque, the Ahmediye Mosque and the Mufti Mosque. Nearby was a Turkish military fort “Burun Tabie” while the other fortress – “Sari-Su” was located in the vicinities of the present-day seaport. The town also contained one Christian church – St Nicholas Church built in 1865.
