About the collection

  • At the beginning of the 20th century, Batumi was a European-style city with straight streets and carved stone houses. The city was decorated with a boulevard, which was built at the initiative of the city police chief Voznesensky in 1884.

Near the boulevard was the Soboro-Alexander Nevsky Military cathedral. The cathedral was founded by the Russian Emperor Alexander III in 1888. On September 25th. It was destroyed in 1929 and the hotel "Intourist" was built on the site, for the construction of which the stones of the military cathedral were used.

         The Boys' Gymnasium opened in 1903. In this building today is located Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University .
