Museum Week is celebrated every year from 18 to 25 May 2024. Museum Week is linked to International Museum Day on 18 May, which was established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to recognise the role of museums in the development of society. The theme of International Museum Day is decided each year by the ICOM network of experts. This year's main theme is "Museums for Education and Research". Numerous events and activities are planned in museums throughout the week.
Today, the week was officially opened at the Ajara Art Museum, where Georgian clothing from the collection of the Khariton Akhvlediani Museum and reproductions of masterpieces from around the world were exhibited. The exhibition was decorated with a small number of artefacts from the archaeological-architectural complex of Gonio Castle, found during archaeological excavations, and replicas of Roman military equipment.
The event was attended by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports of Ajara, Maya Khajishvili, the Deputy Directors of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports of Ajara, Akaki Dzneladze, and Zaur Akhvlediani. The guests congratulated the museum employees on their professional day.
The Academic Women's Chamber Choir of the Batumi Culture Centre, invited especially for the event and directed by Zaira Vadachkoria, performed excellent pieces of music.
