At the beginning of the 20th century, Batumi struggled with malaria, which was transmitted and spread by the Anopheles mosquito, followed by cholera. The biggest problem was the lack of hospitals, so the opening of medical facilities in the city was on the agenda. It was necessary to drain the swamps. Luka Asatiani was elected mayor of the city of Batumi. On his initiative, the draining of wetlands and the construction of drainage canals in the city began. The result was the drying up of swampy areas throughout the city and the eradication of a dangerous disease, malaria. On the initiative of Luka Asatiani, the construction of hospitals in Batumi began in 1897 and was completed in 1902.
