Kantharos was discovered in 2023 in Kobuleti, Pichvnari Hellenistic Cemetery, Fourth-third centuries BC. Kantharos, intended for drinking, is associated with the cult of Dionysus, the god of viticulture. In addition to simple examples, we find pieces adorned with flutes and ivy leaves in Pichvnari.
The popularity of the Attic black-gloss kantharos began in the fourth century BC. The so-called precursors of this type are known as bowl-liked kantharos. During the Hellenistic period, a gradual tendency to enlarge the proportions can be observed.
Pichvnari kantharos dates from the end of the fourth and the beginning of the third century. There are many parallels between plain kantharoses and kantharoses decorated with flutes and ivy leaves. This type of kantharos is found in greater or lesser quantities in Georgia and the northern Black Sea region.
The artefacts are kept at depots of the Batumi Archaeological Museum.
