In 2014-2022, intensive research led by Professor Amiran Kakhidze confirmed that southwest Georgia, particularly Ajara, was one of the powerful centres of ancient metallurgy. The professional metalworkers here are the inventors of many innovations. The example of gold mining in Svaneti, which has been preserved to this day, makes it clear that the ancient metallurgists, in addition to the large industry, were also contained in the alluvial sands washed out by the mountain streams, which were collected in small basins and unsystematically arranged fine mountain channels.
